   A french press isn’t exactly primative. I’d call that cowboy method primative.

   I’ve always preferred coffee prepared in a french press, I just don’t like cleaning up afterwards.

   I tend to use an Aeropress for day to day use. It was cheap, it’s quick and east to use and clean and it makes a good cup.

   That being said I have come across a fair few coffee aficionados that don’t think much of it.

   Ok people, it isn’t necessarily primitive, the bashing the beans is what makes it primitive. :] That being said it is a bit primitive since all you are doing is steeping the beans, and crudely filtering them. I do like the french press, and I feel it is a very unadulterated cup of coffee. There is nothing messing with the coffee or filtering it really which makes for great body. And I love body in my coffee more than any other feature, one of the many reasons I like espresso. I think many people make the grind to coarse for presses. That being said I managed to fix my grinder so I’m back in business! In the morning a cup (actually more like three) of espresso. Now where did those chocolate squares go… ; ]

   I’ve not met a coffee aficionado who DOESN’T prefer the french press. From my personal experience, the coffee is in its most pure, unadulterated state there. There are subtleties that particular method of brewing brings out that other methods cannot meet.

   Granted, Starbucks is by no means the *ideal* coffee connoisseur’s hangout, but the training they put us through relied heavily on that brewing method.

   Once you start using a French press, it’s hard to go back to and/or get excited about coffee prepared any other way.

   Now in Mr. Cutts defense, some aficionados might prefer vacuum methods, or the spooning technique. For everyday coffee though it’s very good. I’ve never had vacuum coffee… someday maybe, but I imagine it being fairly similar to the press.

   Sam, I’d like to hear more about your training. Maybe you could do a guest post or an “interview”. ; ]
